Race Description

The Mersey Tunnel 10K race has grown in popularity each year since 2006 when was brought back to the event calendar after a gap of four years. Originally run through the Birkenhead Tunnel, the race now uses the Wallasey Tunnel as the link from the race start in Pall Mall Liverpool city centre to the finish in New Brighton at the end of the promenade just by Vale Park.

In 2011 around 3,300 entries were taken and this is set to rise once again this year. A more modest 693 finishers were recorded back in 2002 when the race was last staged before being reintroduced at the request of John Gillard from the Mersey Tunnel Authority! John had previously been involved in the race from it’s start and was instrumental in it coming back just before his retirement a couple of years back.

His instinct for a good race has been proven right with the event tripling in size since 2006!

The Mersey Tunnel 10K attracts a good mix of club, charity and recreational runners and a high percentage of participants come back every year to tackle the tunnel and it’s long, steady incline from under the River Mersey.
