Race Description

As part of its Children’s Golden Jubilee Appeal, UK registered charity Street Child of Sierra Leone (SCoSL) is organising the Kiln Sierra Leone Marathon on 9 June 2012.

SCoSL’s aim is to encourage runners from all over the world to visit Sierra Leone to raise money and showcase the charity’s vital work in Freetown, Makeni, Lunsar, Bo, Kono and Tambakha – and to put the spotlight on to the country’s beauty and potential. The event will cater for all running abilities, with marathon, half marathon and 5km distances all being run.

The Kiln Sierra Leone Marathon will be run on both tarred (approximately 30%) and rural roads (approximately 70%), the majority of which are hard-packed mud roads. The route will take in some of the most beautiful scenes of Northern Sierra Leone.

Facilities on the route include: Regular water stations with rehydration sachets/drinks, food stations at the start and finish, fixed and mobile medical points as well as Live music at certain points!

We will have trained UK & local medical staff from the UK to oversee the event. There will be fixed and mobile (4×4) medical support. A full medical plan will be in place to cover all eventualities.

Various marathon schedules are available on the website, ranging from ‘get you round’ to sub 2.30. These are tried and tested, based on the schedules produced by the main running magazines.

These are 12-week programmes so will need to be started in mid March for a race start on 9 June. They involve a mix of distance running, speedwork and hillwork the aim to increase endurance and strength gradually to make you race fit by the time of the marathon.

However the main aim should be to enjoy this unique experience and get yourself fit enough to a level you are personally comfortable with and that will allow you to enjoy the race.
