Race Description

2015 event on Saturday 3rd of October 2015. For a review of the 2011 event go to this link. The Saltergate Circuit Challenge has been organised by Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team for around 30 years in order to raise much needed funds for the teams work. As a Registered Charity every penny of profit from the event goes directly to providing this volunteer emergency search and rescue service. The event starts from the Outdoor Centre in the village of Stape. From the start the route heads north until the ford where the right hand turn is taken along Middle Head Road. This road is taken as far as Raindale Head Farm where the route turns north once again through Cropton Forest. Eventually the route emerges from the forest at Wheeldale Bridge where the first refreshment break is available.

After Wheeldale Bridge the route continues north along the Roman Road before heading down to the stepping stones at Wheeldale Lodge (watch out if there has been heavy rain fall). From here the route heads east and climbs to its high point at Simon Howe. Here you should find a couple of team members huddled in a small tent but ready to check your tally.

The route now starts to head south across the moor and back into Cropton Forest. The first crossing of the beautiful Newton Dale is now made before the route reaches Saltergate Bank. Here the long and short routes diverge.

The short route heads back across the A169 and on to Levisham Moor and along the “pipe track”. This part of the route commands spectacular views of Newton Dale. The route eventually drops on to Levisham Bottoms and to the check point at Levisham Elbow. Here the long and short routes converge once again.

From Saltergate Bank the long route follows Saltergate Brow to Malo Cross, from here the roue heads south up Newgate Brow and to the stunning rock formations of the Bridestones.

The next section follows the bottom of Stain Dale as far as High Dalby House. From here the route climbs out of the dale and up to the Fox and Rabbit pub. Don’t stop too long here other wise the “sweepers” may catch you up. After crossing the A169 the route drops down Cross Dale to Farwath and then heads north along Newton Dale before arriving at Levisham Elbow.

Having merged together both long and short routes cross Newton Dales at Levisham Station and climb to Stony Moor via Newton Banks. Having crossed Stony Moor to Middle Farm the route takes the track west until the Stape Road is met. From here the end is near as the route heads north along the Stape Road until the finish back at the Outdoor Centre. Here you can enjoy a well deserved cup of tea and a hot meal.

If you raise sponsorship for the team in excess of £50 then we will refund your entry fee. Links to the entry form, sponsorship form and previous results are below.
