Race Description

The Escalante Canyons road races include a full marathon, a half marathon, and a 5K fun run, all set In the cowboy country of southern Utah. Small and highly challenging, the marathon and half marathon take place .on a Scenic Byway through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument at elevations of 5500-6500 feet. The marathon course starts in Boulder, Utah, and runs west to Escalante, with only slickrock canyons and high-country ranchlands in between. The half marathon covers the last half of the marathon course. The 5K runs downhill through a lovely canyon just outside Escalante, and all races end at Escalante City Park.
The event is held the second Saturday of each October, falling on October 12th this year. This is one of the best times to visit the area, with turning leaves, pristine air, and great running temperatures. The marathon begins at 7:30 am, the half marathon at 9:00 am, and the 5K at 1:30 pm. The event is held in conjunction with Escalante Heritage Days, a local celebration of the pioneer era.
Entry fees for this year are: $80 (USD) for the marathon and $55 for the half marathon; the 5K fun run is free. The marathon includes a $2100 winners’ purse, with a $500 purse for the half marathon.
The Escalante Canyons Marathon is a non-profit event, with proceeds going towards local community needs. Past runners say that their favorite aspects of the race are the astounding beauty of the courses, the spirited support of race volunteers and the community of Escalante, and the great race organization.
This is a perfect destination race, with loads of places to explore and outdoor things to do in the region. In addition to the National Monument, the event is 50 miles from both Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, and the Boulder Mountains form the northern backdrop for the courses.
